However, when a review is misleading, like one recently posted here, I have to address what I consider unfounded.
It is true that when the exiled Ronit asks Esti how she was after she Ronit left, Esti says she was ill in her head.
However, she is not indicating she has an ongoing mental disorder. She is like nearly million people worldwide each year who experience a depressive episode, often triggered by a trauma.
There are only two things certain: Their lives are significantly altered no one is going back to the way things were and they are bound inextricably for life.
All three will likely face challenges while carving out their futures, but there is no reason to assume they will live unhappily ever after.
Actually, we have better reason to believe they will lead more authenic lives and that the women will continue coming to peace with what they have been suppressing.
And, third, it is a disservice to others to dismiss the film as depressing. I could only justify grading a film depressing if it offered no hope for the situation, characters or culture represented.
And as a drama, its intent is to help us view our world with greater wisdom and empathy, not help us retreat into the rom-com fantasy realm where our romantic ideals are indulged.
To help us better understand our world, dramas often take on disheartening subjects in repressed settings.
It deals with the struggles of AIDS, homophobia, hospitalization and the death of the ravaged main character. The film may be set in an ultra orthodox Jewish area in London, but the core of this conflict is all too familiar to us who grew up in the Bible Belt or in other acutely conservative pockets all over the world.
Certainly, we can find this struggle frustrating, even painful at moments, but the film is not bleak. It is fundamentally about the transformative power of love and freedom.
It is love that arouses two reticent souls made wary by long separation, misperceived rejection and the absence of societal affirmation.
But it is freedom A story about love and sexuality between two women, two old friends, reunited by a death in the family; all of it told through a devout Jewish lens.
There are no villains, nor enemies of any kind beyond, perhaps, the conservative prejudices that can sometimes be found in especially devout communities.
It is warm, beautiful, sorrowful, and wrapped all in hope. For the rest, I highly recommend you give it a watch of your own. This film was poignant, it was touching, it was erotic, but most of all, it was thought-provoking.
It brings to mind how much we, as humans, suffer at the hands of our ideals; we sit in cages of our own making, waiting for freedom when it calls yet forgetting that if we but open the door and fly it could be ours!
The love scenes were beautifully shot, and so romantically portrayed that I found myself crying at the tenderness. The ending was so unexpected, in a wonderfully hopeful way, that I hope it blows down the doors of "bury your gay" tropes and allows light to shine on all happiness for future films and television not to mention, that its feminist aspects of freedom were a pleasant reminder that not all happy endings are perfect.
From the acting to the writing, to the subdued nature of the cinematography that lends to its realness, I cannot praise this glass-ceiling-shattering movie enough.
Unlike many films that address sexuality and faith, I felt Disobedience addresses obligation and expectation vs. I felt that was interesting placed against the orthodox backdrop.
The affair was not so much the cause of disruption of faith and family as it is dictated but the catalyst that brought questions of what is freedom?
Are the devout free if they do not have choice? If I belief in choice then can I be devout? It was more than a story to me but a question for each character to answer.
This is now one of my favorite lesbian films. I would definitely recommend this film. Let me say this about the acting in this movie - Alessandro Nivola's performance was a 10 out of 10, Rachel Weisz's performance was also 10 out of Then, Rachel McAdams comes along and blows apart the entire scale with her performance!
McAdams's talent for conveying multiple at times heartbreaking emotions at once with just a glance is both mind-blowing and stunning throughout the movie.
If it was up to me she would get every award this year for best supporting actress and I really hope she does! The movie was done well by Sabastian Lelio as it allows the audience to feel like we are in the same room with the characters watching all of it go down.
Every LGBT woman will be able to relate. Hell, anyone who has ever had to let go of someone they love due to life circumstance will too.
This one really had an effect on me. I thank Rachel Weisz for optioning the book and bringing this movie to us. See all reviews.
